Where to eat and drink in Adelaide
Belinda recently spent a long weekend in Adelaide and surrounds, a city she's discovered has a vibrant food and drink culture. With inside knowledge from Julie Gibbs, publisher to some of Australia's finest cookbooks, here are some recommended places to try if you are headed there. One of the great things about Adelaide is that everything is relatively close - all the recommendations below are either in central Adelaide or within easy driving distance.
CENTRAL ADELAIDE
North African cuisine with knowledgeable staff, an energetic vibe, delicious food and creative wine list.
Oggi means 'today' in Italian - aptly named as pasta is made fresh daily and produce is seasonal and the best available.
A cosy space with an impressive wine list and abundant offering of share plates such as oysters, kingfish sashimi, cured meats and milk ricotta dumplings.
The Central Market is fun and eating at Lucias a tradition - dishing up delicious bowls of spaghetti or pizza for those who walk by.
ADELAIDE HILLS
Great for brunch or lunch. Friendly staff, a wonderful fresh menu and delightful setting in an old homestead or outside in their gardens.
Tiny so do book ahead but a wonderful culinary experience. Tasting of local wineries (without cellar doors) including the famed Lucy Margaux is also available in the complex.
Stunning setting with a duck-filled pond amongst the family-owned established vineyards. Chris and family will explain their range of 6 European style wines, created from grapes planted 20 years ago. Pop-up food stalls can be found on selected Saturdays.
Fine dining with a spectacular view across the city to the ocean.
McLAREN VALE
A stunning setting with 180 degree views across rolling hills. Sample gins from Never Never Distillery or wines at adjoining Chalk Hill wines. You can also purchase pizzas and other simple fare to add to the experience.
Near McLaren Vale are many beautiful beaches - perfect for stand up paddle boarding or swimming.
Lunch at Star of Greece in Port Wilunga is highly recommended - a light, simple space offering mediterranean cuisine overlooking the ocean.
