AUSTRALIAN THREATENED SPECIES: GREATER GLIDER

AUSTRALIAN THREATENED SPECIES: GREATER GLIDER

One of the cutest Australian mammals we have ever seen! This is the greater glider - a gorgeous and curious creature which is now under threat due to extensive loss of habitat following last summer's devastating bushfires.

The greater glider measures around 30-45cm with an incredibly bushy tail that can be as large as 60cm in length.  Living amongst eucalyptus forest, this nocturnal mammal requires numerous large tree hollows in which to nest during daylight hours.  Tree hollows normally take up to 100 years to form and a hollow large enough to accomodate an animal of this size would need to be around 400 years old.  With the recent extensive loss of Australian flora - the greater glider is now under threat.

We actively support WWF Australia in order to protect and rehabilitate Australian species just like the greater glider.  WWF has recently launched The Australian Wildlife Nature Recovery Fund following the extensive loss of animals from last summer's devastating bushfires.

Unfortunately The Australian government has recently rejected the EPBC Act review's recommendation to strengthen our nature laws and protect our iconic animals like the koala, greater glider and regent honeyeater.  If you would like to help, you can sign the petition led by WWF Australia to urge federal government to improve the laws that protect our wildlife.
